Ideas To Save Some Cash On Your Electric Bill

Is your electric bill higher than you'd like it to be? Is your family growing up and even the kids are now using more things throughout the house that are plugged in, causing your energy costs to rise? If you'd like to get your next bill down, here are some ideas that might help you.

Hit the Switch or Unplug Completely

You can help yourself out if you get into the habit of turning lights off as you go from room to room. You should also instruct your family members, especially your kids or teenagers, to be more mindful of what they are leaving on when they walk to a new room.

If you want to take things a step further,  you could also get into the habit of unplugging appliances or certain other devices. Some devices, like televisions, still technically draw power in standby mode even when they are not turned on. Unplugging them completely will prevent this from happening. Another option would be to use a power strip that completely cuts the power to multiple devices when it is switched off.

Change to More Energy-Efficient Bulbs

If you are still using incandescent bulbs throughout your home, this is something you'll want to look into changing. More homeowners are using LED bulbs because they are more energy efficient. Take some time to count the number of bulbs throughout your home, run to the local department store, and get enough LED bulbs for the entire house.

Open the Blinds

Beyond turning lights off when you are not in the room, you could also make an adjustment to keep them turned off even when you are in the room. Natural sunlight is your ally in the battle to keep your electric bill down. Open the blinds on a sunny day and you should have enough natural light during daytime hours to keep more of the lights in your house switched off.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat is a great way to reduce multiple energy bills including electricity. When your air conditioner or heating system knows not to turn on at all within a certain time frame, you won't be using any electricity during that time.

If you are still unhappy with your electric bill, contact your local electric company to discuss your options or start shopping around for other choices in your area. Be more mindful of your use of electricity throughout the house and you might start to see your electric bill come down.
