Residential Electrical Issues: See Why You Have Dead Outlets

It is unpleasant and inconvenient when your electrical outlet suddenly stops working. This problem can arise if the outlet is too old and requires a replacement. But it can also result from a more complex issue that needs the attention of a professional electrician. For instance, you need to hire a residential electrical contractor if your outlets keep dying because of wiring problems in the home.

To avoid electrical accidents, you should have an electrician repair dead and dysfunctional outlets as soon as you notice a problem. Here are the most common causes of dead power outlets.

Problems Emanating From the Circuit Breaker

The role of the circuit breaker is to control the amount of current that appliances draw from the panel. The breaker senses an excessive voltage demand and trips. You can open the control panel or fuse box to check the condition of the breakers and reset any that might have tripped. But if the breaker trips excessively, it might be time to seek help from an experienced electrician.

Shoddy DIY Wiring Jobs

Naturally, the electrical wiring will age, weaken, and split over time. Split wiring leads to an inadequate supply of electrical current to an outlet. Furthermore, you may notice buzzing sounds and burnt smells or marks on the affected outlets.

Loose wiring is also a safety hazard because it can spark and start an electrical fire. If you have dead outlets and have ruled out problems with the panel, call an electrician to check the state of the wiring. Also, check whether the outlet feels hot to the touch, which indicates damaged wiring.

Problems With the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter

Some outlets have a ground fault circuit interrupter, GFCI. The outlet is likely to have an interrupter when located close to a water source. This feature is a precautionary measure so that when the current strays from the intended path, it completely shuts off the power supply.

You can reset the interrupter and restore the outlet function. However, if the interrupter keeps shutting off the power supply even when there are no threats, you need to schedule an inspection of the system.

Bad Connection in the Outlet

Outlets can have a bad connection, which interrupts their functionality. For example, if installed using a box, a loose connection and damaged screws could be problematic. In addition, the inability to draw current makes the power outlet fail.

Learning the possible causes of power outlet failure will enable you to take the necessary preventative measures. But when you experience anything out of the ordinary in your power outlets, call a residential electrical contractor. They will restore the functionality of the outlets and prevent potential electrical accidents.
